A German colleague and I were discussing the Euro crisis and the general perceptions surrounding it. At one point he made the comment that “people are still afraid of a strong Germany”.

My response to him was that Germany will be forever misunderstood. Then I read this letter to the editor in one of New Zealand’s national newspapers…

“Reading about the recent antics of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and her sidekick, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, I am reminded of another era. Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was neither alone nor wrong in opposing the reunification of Germany. We must watch out in 2012 for the rise of the Fourth Reich.”

Sad that this is still prevalent…
